The right crane for a truck-mounted crane transport

When planning a truck-mounted crane transport, choosing the right type of crane obviously plays an important role. In this blog, we explain what a truck-mounted crane is, what the options are and what factors go into choosing the right truck-mounted crane for a transport.

What is a truck-mounted crane?

There are two types of cranes. Large mobile telescopic cranes that can lift heavy loads but cannot transport anything, and the auto-loader crane. This is a crane mounted on a means of transport that can not only lift goods, such as glass, turbines or wood, but also transport them by itself.
So do you need transport to bring hoistable goods from, say, Rotterdam to Amsterdam? Then truck-mounted crane transport is for you!

Truck-mounted cranes with JIB and winch

A JIB is an extra crane part that can be attached to the main boom. This allows a truck-mounted crane to reach further than just the main boom, but also creates a second articulation point. This also allows the crane to be used when lifting work is required where there are obstacles in flight.

A winch is an optional component on the self-loading crane and is used when placing loads. A winch is a second lifting point on mast of the crane and consists of a drum with an additional cable. When a winch is deployed, loads can be lifted both horizontally and vertically as they can be tilted with the crane. For example, tanks, which have to be transported lying down due to their length, can be placed standing up at unloading locations.

A JIB and a winch are essential tools for using a truck-mounted crane in hard-to-reach places with obstacles.

Possibility of trailers behind a truck-mounted crane

There are various means of transport that can be equipped with a crane. At Boerman Transport, these are box trucks and tractors.
It is possible to couple a trailer or semi-trailer behind these vans.
There are different types of trailers such as a low deck trailer, a semi low loader and a low loader. Many trailers from Boerman Transport can extend, creating extra load length.

Due to the great diversity of trailers in our fleet, the combination possibilities are almost unlimited and we can provide a solution for all your logistical problems.

How do you choose the right truck-mounted crane?

The capacity of a truck-mounted crane is expressed in tonnes/metre.
Boerman Transport has cranes with capacities from 42 to 135 ton/meter.
The formula is 'force x distance'. For example, a crane that can lift a load of 4 tonnes at a distance of 10 metres has a capacity of 40 tonnes/metre.

So theoretically, it should not be difficult to determine the right crane. However, there are so many factors that can be disruptive and cause surprises during transport. Think of obstacles such as houses, trees or other things that can get in the way. In addition, the size of the work site and subsoil is decisive because a crane must be able to fully outrigger on hard ground to use its maximum capacity. Also, the load must have proper lifting points because otherwise additional lifting equipment may be needed to carry out the work.

So there are many factors that do not make it easy to determine required type of truck-mounted crane.
Boerman Transport has the expertise and our professionals are always ready to determine, together with you, the right vehicle combination with the required truck-mounted crane and any auxiliary equipment.
